(KPL) In response to ongoing water shortages, Minister of Public Works and Transport Ngamphasong Muangmani, alongside Vientiane Mayor Adsaphangthong Siphandone and relevant agencies, conducted an inspection of key water pumping stations on18 March. The visit aimed to assess water levels and address supply deficiencies affecting the capital.

According to Saiya Saimoungkhoun, Director of Vientiane Water Supply State Enterprise, the city's water production capacity currently stands at 348,000 cubic meters per day, sourced from six main plants: Dongmakkhai: 120,000 m³/dayJinaimo: 80,000 m³/Day, Kaoliew: 60,000 m³/Day, Dongbang: 44,000 m³/Day, Saendin: 24,000 m³/DayandThadeua: 20,000 m³/Day.

Additionally, water plants in Sangthong district produce 2,110 m³/day, while Pakngum district has a capacity of 2,600 m³/day. The supply serves 819,863 residents across seven districts, with a total of 202,274 water meters.

Water consumption in Vientiane rises significantly during the dry season, exceeding supply in some areas. Authorities have identified several urgent measures to mitigate shortages, including Maximizing production to maintain the 348,000 m³/day Capacity, Adjusting water pressure to ensure distribution across all districts, Enhancing pipeline monitoring and repair efficiency, aiming to fix leaks within 24 hours, Exploring alternative supply sources and improving water trucking services for affected areas.

Government officials emphasized the need for sustainable water management, urging the acceleration of planned infrastructure projects. Existing agreements on water system expansion and improvement will be reviewed to ensure timely implementation.

"Ensuring adequate water supply for all residents, especially during peak demand periods, remains a top priority," said Minister Ngamphasong. "We are committed to both short-term fixes and long-term investments in Vientiane’s water infrastructure."

As temperatures rise, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging the public to use water efficiently while infrastructure upgrades are underway.
