(KPL/Prensa Latina) UN agencies reacted today to the decision of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to leave the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The WHO regretted Washington’s break with the entity, which plays a crucial role in protecting the health of the world’s people, since by promoting research into the causes of diseases and epidemic outbreaks, it contributes to strengthening health systems.

The spokesman for the international organization, Tarik Jasarevic, confirmed that the United States is the largest individual donor and highlighted that in 2023 the financial contribution of the northern country represented 18 percent of the agency’s total budget.

According to a resolution approved in 1948 by the US Congress, the president must notify the organization of the decision to withdraw one year in advance, so the country now has a period of 12 months to make its final exit.

President Donald Trump initiated actions to leave the WHO in 2020, during his first term, but the Joe Biden administration reversed the attempt.

For its part, the World Meteorological Organization stressed that President Trump’s intention to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, universally adopted in 2015, means a return to the policies applied during his first term in the White House.

Through a statement, the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, encouraged cities, states and businesses in the United States to continue to demonstrate vision and leadership in working to keep carbon emissions low and for sustainable and resilient economic growth.
