(KPL) In 2024, the country achieved a significant milestone in its annual blood donation campaign, successfully collecting 78,000 blood bags. This effort saw a balanced contribution from both central and local levels, with 33,300 bags collected from the central level and 44,700 bags gathered from local regions. The impressive collection underscores the nation's ongoing commitment to maintaining an adequate blood supply for healthcare needs year-round.
Throughout 2024, a total of 1,789 blood donation campaigns were conducted nationwide. These efforts resulted in the collection of 71,596 blood bags, meeting 92% of the annual target but falling short by 6,404 bags. Despite this gap, provinces such as the National Blood Transfusion Institute in Vientiane Capital, Luang Prabang, Xayaboury, Sekong, and Attapeu were able to meet their targets, showcasing effective local outreach and community involvement.
The year, however, was not without its challenges. Severe flooding and extreme heat during key months hampered full achievement of the goal, impacting some regions' ability to reach their donation targets.
Looking ahead, the national target for 2025 has been set at 80,400 blood bags, with 34,000 bags allocated to the central level and 46,400 to local levels. Building on the progress made in 2024, the upcoming campaign will focus on raising public awareness, enhancing outreach efforts, and addressing the barriers faced in 2024 to ensure greater participation. With these improvements in place, the goal for 2025 is to surpass previous records and ensure a sufficient blood supply to meet the country's healthcare needs.
