(KPL/VNA) Thailand's cabinet on December 25 approved new minimum wage increases and the second phase of the government's signature handout scheme for elderly people.
The country’s wage committee decided to raise the daily minimum wage by 2.9% to between 337 THB and 400 THB (9.9 USD to 11.7 USD), varying in each region, effective January 1, 2025. The top end of that range will apply only to the provinces of Phuket, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri and Rayong, and the holiday island of Samui.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said the cabinet had approved the second phase of the handout scheme worth 40 billion THB for 4 million elderly people who will receive payments by January.
The first phase of the 4 billion USD scheme was launched in September, with about 14.5 million people having so far received payments of 10,000 THB each. The government plans to distribute the handouts to about 45 million people overall.
