Nationwide Efforts Resolve Over 3,300 Drug Cases in 11 Months

KPL Over the past 11 months, Lao authorities have resolved 3,395 drug-related cases, arresting 5,168 suspects, including 505 women and 199 foreigners (19 of them women).

(KPL) – Over the past 11 months, Lao authorities have resolved 3,395 drug-related cases, arresting 5,168 suspects, including 505 women and 199 foreigners (19 of them women).

Seized drugs include 380.96 kg of heroin, 81 million methamphetamine pills (weighing over 8,103 kg), 4,816 kg of ice, 84.86 kg of opium, 3,583 kg of marijuana, 33.14 kg of ketamine, smaller quantities of cocaine, e-cigarette pills, and chemicals, as well as 77 trucks, 480 motorcycles, and firearms with ammunition. 

The report, delivered by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Security General Vilay Lakhamphong during the 8th Ordinary Session of the 9th Legislature of the National Assembly on November 20, 2024, highlighted the government's unwavering commitment to combating drug issues despite challenges.

A 2024 survey identified 5,831 hectares of illegal opium fields in nine northern and central provinces, with 126 hectares destroyed. Sangthong District alone saw the inspection and eradication of 123 opium poppy plants, while 126 tons of opium cultivation chemicals were seized and destroyed in Bokeo, Luang Prabang, and Luang Namtha provinces.

Lao treatment and rehabilitation centers are currently supporting 5,132 drug addicts, including 209 women. Of these, 2,513 (112 women) have completed treatment and returned home, while 2,619 (97 women) remain under care.
