(KPL) The Embassy of the Republic of Korea is hosting the Korea-Laos Cultural Festival 2024 at Vientiane Center in Vientiane on Nov 1-2 to celebrate Lao PDR’s successful chairmanship of ASEAN in 2024.
The festival offers a variety of cultural activities, including the chance to wear a Hanbok (traditional Korean attire), sample popular Korean dishes such as Kimbab, Tteokbokki, Japchae, and Dakkangjung, and play traditional Korean games.
In his welcoming speech, Korean Ambassador to the Lao PDR, Mr. Jung Yung Soo, expressed gratitude for the Lao Government’s support during the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and highlighted the significance of the recent summit between Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith. This meeting, he noted, was an opportunity to celebrate 29 years of diplomatic relations and discuss ways to further strengthen cooperation.

Ambassador Jung expressed his hope that the festival would serve as a space for Laotians and Koreans to connect and share cultural experiences. Deputy Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism Mr. Phosy Keomanyvong delivered a congratulatory speech, while ambassadors from ASEAN countries and other distinguished guests attended the opening ceremony to mark the occasion.
The festival includes promotional booths by Korean agencies like KOTRA, KOICA, K-EXIM, KOFIH, K-LAB, and EPS Center, showcasing their local projects in Laos, alongside Korean companies presenting products such as cosmetics, food, and other consumer items.
Around 1,000 attendees enjoyed performances and demonstrations, including Taekwondo, K-pop shows, a Kimchi-making demonstration, and traditional games like Tuho and Jegichagi. A highlight of this year’s event was a soccer game co-organized by the Korean Embassy and the Lao Football Federation to honor the Korean head coach leading the Lao national soccer team since this summer.
The Embassy of the Republic of Korea will host an additional event in December, the “Korean Ambassador Cup Baseball Tournament.”

The answer lies in modern, pragmatic diplomacy, where geographical distance is outweighed by mutual strategic interests and long-term vision. This is not a partnership rooted in shared history or deep cultural ties, but a deliberate, gradual bridge-building exercise within a shifting global landscape.
