Japan Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthening Relations with ASEAN and Laos at 27th ASEAN-Japan Summit

KPL Japan’s Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru, during a press conference in Vientiane, emphasized his country’s unwavering commitment to deepening ties with ASEAN, building on half a century of partnership rooted in mutual trust and cooperation.

(KPL) Japan’s Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru, during a press conference in Vientiane, emphasized his country’s unwavering commitment to deepening ties with ASEAN, building on half a century of partnership rooted in mutual trust and cooperation. 

The Prime Minister was attending the 27th ASEAN-Japan Summit and related meetings, held in Vientiane between Oct 8-11, where he expressed Japan’s resolve to enhance the region's connectivity, economic resilience, and disaster preparedness.

In his remarks, the Japanese Prime Minister highlighted ASEAN’s confidence in Japan as a reliable partner, noting that ASEAN nations have high expectations for increased collaboration across various sectors. 

“I reaffirm our determination to strengthen the bond of friendship that has connected Japan with ASEAN countries over the past five decades,” said Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba. 

He also acknowledged ASEAN's hopes for continued cooperation in all sectors, reflecting Japan’s role as a trusted partner.

Looking ahead to 2025, the Prime Minister underscored the significance of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Laos. He expressed enthusiasm about upgrading bilateral relations to a "comprehensive strategic partnership," with Japan committing to enhanced cooperation in politics, security, and economic development. 

Japan will focus on supporting Laos in building a self-sufficient and resilient economy, while also contributing to the country’s financial stability and growth.

Additionally, the Japanese Prime Minister expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the efforts of Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone in ensuring the success of this year’s ASEAN Summit. He noted the upcoming expansion of Wattay International Airport as part of Japan’s commitment to boosting connectivity and economic development in Laos.

As Laos continues to recover from recent natural disasters, the Japanese leader pledged Japan’s support in strengthening disaster resilience, stating, “Japan is ready to contribute to enhancing Laos’ preparedness and response capacity in the face of future calamities.”
