(KPL) The Laos-China Railway Company held a graduation ceremony in Vientiane on Monday for presenting certificates to the first batch of 14 Lao students who have successfully completed a 8-month train driving training programme.

The event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Saleumxay Kommasith, Deputy Minister of Public Works and Transport, Mr. Xaysongkham Manotham, Minister of Education and Sports, Mr. Phut Simmalavong and relevant officials.

“This event is regarded as an important event in the history of Lao PDR's transportation development and a symbol of collective great achievement of Laos and China in developing talent railway workers for Laos,” said Mr. Xaysongkham.

The Laos-China railway has been operating safely for more than 2 years. Its passenger and cargo transportations have been increasing significantly.

Mr. Xaysongkham said the Laos-China railway has been playing a crucial role in driving the country's socio-economic development and promoting international connectivity in the region.

In June 2020, the Laos-China Railway Company Limited launched a train driving training programme for Lao students. The training was conducted by Chinese teachers.

Two years later, 66 people were selected as assistant drivers and by the end of 2023, 14 co-drivers with a driving mileage of more than 100,000 kilometers had been selected.

After eight months of further trainings, they all passed relevant qualification examinations to become the first Lao train drivers.
