(KPL) The Family Management and Grass Roots Development Department, Ministry of Public Security started issuing electronic identification cards (E-ID) on 30 March.
Family Management and Grass Roots Development Department in cooperation with Huawei Device Laos Company held a launching ceremony on 30 March for the new E-ID card in Vientiane Capital.
The ceremony was witnessed by Deputy Minister of Public Security, Brigadier General Sinthavong Xayakone, Commercial Counsellor of Embassy of China to Laos, Mr Zhao Weny, CEO of Huawei Device Laos, Mr Zhang Dongya, and senior officials from the ministry.
The electronic identification card (E-ID) programme is to issue new identification cards for all Lao citizens across the country, progressively rolling out the technologically advanced cards that will replace the older ones.
In its entirety, the project covers the ID card production centre, a data collection centre and 160 data supply stations.
The E-ID programme is one of the ICT projects that government has given great importance to because it utilises higher technology for data management by the government.
The US$37.5 million project will be implemented three phases beginning in Vientiane Capital. The second phase will be conducted in the six provinces of Oudomxay, Luang Prabang, Xieng Khuang, Vientiane, Xaysomboun, Savannakhet and Champassak, and the third phase will be implemented in Phongsaly, Luang Namtha, Bokeo, Xayaboury, Huaphan, Borikhamxay, Khammuan, Saravan, Xekong, and Attapeu.
