KPL The Commission for Information and Education of the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party on Monday held a seminar to strengthen understanding of laws and regulations governing media operations, as part of preparations for the First National Media Conference.

The seminar featured a keynote presentation by Khammon Chanthachit, an alternate member of the Party Central Committee and Deputy Head of the commission. It was attended by senior officials, media executives and representatives from Party media agencies.
Khammon underscored the importance of a sound legal framework in supporting professional, responsible and effective media operations. His presentation covered the role of the media, the rights and responsibilities of journalists and media organizations, and the legal obligations and prohibitions governing news reporting and publication.
He said comprehensive media legislation and supporting regulations are fundamental to strengthening governance under the rule of law. Although legal provisions governing the media are already embedded in various laws and sub-legislation, inconsistent implementation and limited understanding have hindered effective enforcement, leaving room for misinterpretation and misuse.

Mr. Khammon stressed that improving legal awareness among media professionals and regulatory authorities is essential to meeting the demands of the evolving media landscape. He called on journalists, editors and media managers to study and fully understand the country's legal framework to ensure their work is conducted in accordance with professional standards and national legislation.
He noted that strict compliance with media laws and regulations is vital to safeguarding journalistic integrity, strengthening Party leadership over media, enhancing state governance and promoting responsible communication that serves the interests of the nation and the public.
The seminar forms part of a series of activities leading up to the First National Media Conference, which focuses on strengthening Party leadership and advancing the transformation of Laos' media sector toward higher professional standards in the digital era.
