Laos is preparing a nationwide tree planting campaign covering more than 7,300 hectares as part of activities marking National Tree Planting Day on June 1, 2026.
The campaign aims to expand green spaces, restore the environment and strengthen public awareness about forest and nature conservation through the planting of more than 4.5 million seedlings across the country.
Speaking on May 25, Minister Linkham Douangsavanh said the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in coordination with Party committees and local authorities nationwide, is preparing large-scale tree planting activities to be carried out throughout the rainy season.
According to the minister, the broader national plan includes collecting more than 100,000 kilograms of seeds, raising over 25 million seedlings and planting trees across 50,000 hectares nationwide.
In Vientiane, the ministry, together with the capital’s agriculture and forestry sector and other relevant agencies, plans to organize a tree planting campaign covering around 50 hectares.
More than 80,000 seedlings are expected to be planted in the capital, including native and commercial species such as teak and African mahogany.
Authorities are encouraging state agencies, businesses and the public to participate in tree planting activities based on local conditions. Suitable planting areas include vacant land, gardens, school grounds, office compounds, construction sites and roadsides.
The government is also partnering with the private sector to organize public awareness activities, including a marathon and walking event titled “Run/Walk for Our Forests and Fresh Air.”
The event, scheduled from May 29 to June 1, marks the 46th anniversary of National Tree Planting Day, the 53rd anniversary of World Environment Day and the 27th anniversary of National Environment Day.
Officials say the activities are intended to promote environmental awareness, encourage public participation in forest conservation and introduce modern technologies and tools related to environmental protection
