The second ordinary session of the 10th National Assembly on October 5, 2026 elected Mr Sonexay Siphandone as President of the 10th National Assembly and approved Mr Saleumxay Kommasith as Prime Minister of the Lao PDR.
(KPL) The National Assembly Standing Committee proposed Mr Sonexay Siphandone, a member of the Political Bureau of the Party Central Committee and National Assembly member for Constituency No. 15 in Champasak Province, for the position of NA President.
The proposal was made in accordance with Article 57, Clause 5 of the 2015 amended Constitution and Article 52, Clause 2 of the 2024 amended Law on the National Assembly, based on a proposal from the President of the State dated October 1, 2026.
The National Assembly Standing Committee said Mr Sonexay meets the required qualifications for the position, including leadership experience, knowledge of the political, legal, economic and administrative systems, and experience in guiding and overseeing the implementation of state laws and important national decisions.
The National Assembly also approved the appointment of Mr Saleumxay Kommasith, a member of the Political Bureau of the Party Central Committee and Deputy Prime Minister, as Prime Minister of the Lao PDR.
The appointment was approved by all 158 National Assembly members present, representing 100 percent approval.
The elections and appointments took place during the second ordinary session of the 10th National Assembly, which is being held from October 5–21 in Vientiane.
