KPL A health walk was held in Vientiane to celebrate National Handicrafts Day and mark the 25th anniversary of the development of the Lao handicrafts sector under the theme “Preserving Traditional Wisdom and Promoting the Value of Lao Handicrafts”.

The event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Santiphab Phomvihane; Naly Sisoulith, spouse of the President and Chairperson of the Advisory Committee of the Lao Handicraft Association; senior Party and government officials; members of the diplomatic corps; representatives of international organisations; handicraft producers and business operators; civil servants; association members; and students.
The walk aimed to promote public health while bringing together people from different sectors to support the preservation, transmission and promotion of Lao handicrafts as an important part of the country’s cultural heritage.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Industry and Commerce Malaithong Kommasith said Lao handicrafts represent more than commercial goods or decorative items, reflecting the identity, traditions, way of life and accumulated knowledge of the Lao people.
He noted that traditional craftsmanship has been passed down through generations, with each product reflecting the skills, dedication and creativity of local artisans. The sector also contributes to economic development by creating jobs and generating income, particularly for women and rural communities, while helping reduce poverty and improve living standards.
Over the past 25 years, the sector has continued to develop through government support, the efforts of artisans and businesses, and the work of the Lao Handicraft Association. Support from consumers and partners at home and abroad has also helped preserve and promote traditional craftsmanship.
Malaithong called on the public and all sectors to support Lao handicrafts by wearing traditional textiles and purchasing and using locally made products. He also stressed the need to improve product quality and value to strengthen the sector’s competitiveness in international markets, increase incomes for artisans and raise the profile of Lao handicrafts worldwide.
The celebration highlighted the importance of safeguarding traditional knowledge, supporting local producers and promoting handicrafts as both a symbol of national identity and a source of sustainable economic opportunities.
