(KPL) An official ceremony was held on March 10, 2026, in Vientiane to launch the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, with free service offered from March 10 to May 9, 2026 as part of a trial operation.

Mr. Khamphan Vongthana, Head of the Sustainable Urban Transport Project in Vientiane Capital under the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, said the trial aims to prepare the system for full-scale operations.

The BRT system has been developed to international standards to improve the quality of public transport, reduce traffic congestion and road accidents, and promote a cleaner urban environment in the capital.

The Sustainable Urban Transport Project in Vientiane was approved by the government in 2014 and supported by loans and grants from international partners. Construction of BRT infrastructure, vehicles, equipment and operational management systems began in early 2024 and has now been completed.

During the two-month trial period, the BRT buses will operate daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. During peak hours (6:00–9:00 AM and 4:00–6:00 PM), buses will arrive at stations every 6–7 minutes, while during regular hours the interval will be 10–15 minutes. Services will be operated by the Vientiane State Bus Enterprise and Phet Aloun Import-Export and Domestic Transport Company Limited.

The route runs between Dongdok Station, located in front of the National University of Laos, and Morning Market Station, passing through 19 stations including Xiangkhouang, Saphangmeuk, 450 Year Road, Phongsavanh Bank, SOS School, the Kaysone Phomvihane Museum, ICTC Center, Phonkheng, the Patuxay Monument, and Thatfoun.

Authorities also announced that during BRT operating hours other vehicles are prohibited from using the BRT lane, except for emergency vehicles such as ambulances, rescue units, fire trucks, and official government convoys authorized by authorities. Other vehicles may use the lane between 10:01 PM and 5:59 AM when necessary, provided safety is ensured.

Authorities encourage government officials, workers, students, business operators, and residents—including foreigners living in Vientiane—to make greater use of public transport and follow newly adjusted traffic regulations in the city center.
