(KPL) Thongsavanh Phomvihane led a delegation to Luang Prabang Province on Feb 16–17 to inspect field operations and advance preparations for Laos to host the 3rd Review Conference of the Convention on Cluster Munitions.
The country will serve as host and president of the conference, scheduled to take place in Vientiane from Sept 14–18, 2026, with an estimated 700 to 900 delegates from more than 150 countries expected to attend.
During the visit, the delegation inspected UXO survey and clearance operations in Pak Ou District, including sites designated for field visits by international delegates. Officials reviewed progress in implementing national strategic plans, ensuring compliance with updated standards and strengthening coordination with provincial authorities to integrate clearance work into local development planning.
Minister Thongsavanh emphasized that effective field operations demonstrate Laos’ commitment to fulfilling international obligations and advancing humanitarian disarmament efforts.
The visit coincided with the 30th anniversary of UXO Lao, highlighting ongoing national and international cooperation to address unexploded ordnance contamination and support sustainable development
