The Secretariat of the 12th National Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) officially announced that the Congress will convene from January 6-8, 2026, in Vientiane.
The announcement was made on January 4, 2026, at the National Convention Centre in Vientiane by Mr. Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune, Chairman of the Secretariat of the 12th National Congress, during a press conference.
The 12th National Congress will last for three days and will be attended by 834 delegates, representing a nationwide Party membership of 421,865. The delegates were democratically elected from Party congresses at central, ministerial, and local levels, ensuring comprehensive representation of all sectors, ethnic groups, genders, and age groups. In addition, 388 invited guests will attend the Congress.
The 12th National Congress is described as an event of major political and historical significance for both the Party and the nation. It will be held under the theme “Enhancing the Party’s Strong Leadership, Proactively Building an Independent and Self-Reliant Economy, Continuing to Consolidate the People’s Democratic Regime, and Advancing towards Socialism.”
The Congress is scheduled to deliberate and adopt four key documents: the third Political Programme of the Party; the Political Report of the 11th Central Committee; the 10th Five-Year National Socio-Economic Development Plan (2026–2030) and revised Party Statutes for the 12th tenure.
These documents are expected to define the Party’s strategic direction, political and organizational line, and the country’s socio-economic development pathway in line with the realities of the Lao PDR. Preparatory committees have conducted extensive research, consultations, and multiple rounds of revision prior to January 2026, gathering input from central and local levels as well as from friendly countries, to ensure the documents reflect collective wisdom and practical experience.
The Congress will also elect the 12th Central Committee, the Party’s highest leading body for the upcoming term. The personnel preparation process, carried out in the lead-up to January 2026, has followed Party regulations, emphasizing democratic procedures, thorough vetting, and high standards to ensure the selection of capable, ethical, and dedicated leaders.
Mr. Kikeo noted that preparations for the 12th National Congress have been underway since 2023, under the close leadership of the Party Central Committee’s Politburo and Secretariat. The process has become a broad mass movement and a significant contribution to the successful implementation of the resolutions of the 11th National Congress, laying a firm foundation for the 12th tenure beginning in 2026.
He called on the entire Party, state institutions, armed forces, and Lao people to continue striving with unity and enthusiasm to welcome the 12th National Congress, which will officially open on Tuesday.
