(KPL) Vientiane will implement traffic direction changes across nine routes in the Sikhottabong, Chanthabouly and Sisattanak districts to support the development of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and the planned Transit Mall along Setthathirath Road. The changes will affect the section from the Khun Bulom traffic-light intersection (Wat Inpeng) to Khobjai Deu Restaurant, covering approximately 600 metres.

The adjustments form part of wider efforts to raise public awareness and ensure clear, unified understanding of the new traffic arrangements, including the methods and measures required for implementation.

To support the initiative, the Department of Public Works and Transport of Vientiane held a training session on 5 December 2025. The session outlined the traffic management plan, detailed the new one-way systems, and defined the responsibilities of traffic police in directing traffic and enforcing regulations. It also covered deployment of personnel at key points to ensure the plan is properly implemented. The objective is to ensure all participants can accurately explain the changes to their families and communities, helping prevent confusion, public concern or misinformation.

Speaking at the event, Mr Bounyavath Nilasay, Head of the Department of Public Works and Transport of Vientiane, said the training aims to disseminate the procedures and implementation measures outlined in the Vientiane Mayor’s notification on the traffic reforms.

He explained that the traffic management plan was designed to facilitate the forthcoming BRT system and the construction of the Transit Mall along Setthathirath Road. As a result, traffic direction changes are required on nine main routes in Sikhottabong, Chanthabouly and Sisattanak districts to rebalance vehicle flow and ensure smoother, safer movement in and out of the city.

Mr Bounyavath added that the training marks an important step in preparing for the restructuring of Vientiane’s traffic system and shaping a more modern and efficient face for the city.
