The Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) and the European Union celebrated a major diplomatic milestone on November 21, marking 50 years since the establishment of official relations between the two partners.

To commemorate the anniversary, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Ms. Kaja Kallas, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR, Mr. Thongsavan Phomvihane, in Brussels. During the meeting, both leaders exchanged letters of congratulations, underscoring the significance of five decades of cooperation, dialogue and shared aspirations.
In their discussions, the two sides reflected on the “solid foundations” that have shaped a partnership steadily strengthened over half a century. The EU reaffirmed that its engagement with Lao PDR is firmly rooted in its broader Strategic Partnership with ASEAN, emphasizing mutual goals of enhanced connectivity, regional stability and sustainable development.

Looking ahead, the EU expressed readiness to support the Lao PDR in implementing its forthcoming 10th National Socio-Economic Development Plan, which will outline the country’s priorities for the next five years. According to both sides, key areas of cooperation will continue to include governance, economic transformation, and deeper regional integration.
The meeting also highlighted the EU and the Lao PDR’s shared commitment to global cooperation and a rules-based international order, with leaders expressing confidence that the next decades will bring further progress in bilateral relations.
As the two partners celebrate half a century of diplomatic ties, both pledged to continue building a future-oriented partnership that supports sustainable growth and contributes to a more interconnected and stable region.
