Lawmakers have called on the government to urgently repair and improve damaged roads across the country, citing poor infrastructure as a major obstacle to connectivity, trade and development.
Speaking during the 10th Ordinary Session of the 9th National Assembly on 11 November, chaired by Vice President of the Assembly Sounthone Xayachack, members also pressed the government to address key economic challenges, strengthen resource management and build a more self-reliant economy.
Suayphet Thongsombath, a representative from Houaphanh Province, highlighted the severe deterioration of Route 6 linking Xieng Khouang and Houaphanh provinces, saying that the condition of the road had made travel and transport extremely difficult. “Even though the distance is not long, it can take several days to reach the destination. During the rainy season, the road becomes impassable,” she said.
She urged the government to accelerate road repairs and to prioritise major infrastructure projects, including the planned Vientiane–Xaysomboun–Xieng Khouang–Houaphanh expressway and the Bolikhamxay–Xieng Khouang–Houaphanh road improvement project.
Bounluan Xomsihapanya, a member representing Xayaboury Province, said the government should make agriculture the backbone of economic growth by promoting quality processing and cooperative farming. He noted that more than 90% of Lao people depend on agriculture and small enterprises for their livelihoods.
He also urged the government to improve road links to support trade and to avoid unsustainable investment and farming practices that damage forests and soil. He called for stronger law enforcement to ensure responsible resource use and transparent state management.
