KPL The Government of Canada has donated 50,000 Canadian dollars (valued at over 700 million Lao kip) to the Lao Red Cross to assist with disaster relief and recovery efforts for flood-affected communities in southern Laos.

A handover ceremony took place at the Lao Red Cross headquarters in Vientiane, attended by Mr. Khamlavan Chanthalavong, President of the Lao Red Cross, and Mr. Kent Vachon, Ambassador of Canada to the Lao PDR.

The aid is designated to support comprehensive relief and recovery operations in some of the most severely affected areas of Savannakhet and Saravane provinces. Specifically, assistance will reach five villages in Sonnabuly District and two villages in Songkhone District of Savannakhet, as well as 12 villages in Toumlan District and eight villages in Ta-Oy District of Saravane.

“This vital assistance will significantly support the recovery of livelihoods for people affected by natural disasters,”stated Mr. Khamlavan, expressing his deep gratitude to the Government of Canada.

He reaffirmed that the aid “will be delivered to affected people comprehensively and in a timely manner.”

The funding will support a multi-faceted disaster recovery program, focusing primarily on the purchase and distribution of essential relief items to affected households. In addition to immediate humanitarian aid, the initiative also emphasizes long-term recovery, including the promotion of gender equality and climate change adaptation programs.

The project will run through February 28, 2026, with monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to ensure transparency and effectiveness in aid distribution.

Ambassador Kent Vachon highlighted that this contribution reflects Canada’s continued commitment to helping Laos strengthen its resilience to natural disasters. The partnership with the Lao Red Cross, he added, ensures that assistance will reach the most vulnerable communities, helping them rebuild and prepare for future challenges.

This contribution underscores the importance of international cooperation in mitigating the impacts of flooding and advancing sustainable recovery for communities across Laos.
