KPL (At the invitation of Mr. Kim Jong Un, General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea and President of State Affairs of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), President Thongloun Sisoulith of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) led a high-level Party and State delegation on an official state visit to the DPRK from October 7 to 8, 2025.

The visit aimed to further strengthen the traditional bonds of friendship, solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between the two Parties, the two States, and the peoples of Laos and Korea. These enduring relations—founded on shared revolutionary ideals and mutual respect—remain a cornerstone of the partnership between the two nations.

During the visit, President Thongloun and his delegation participated in a series of joint celebrations commemorating significant milestones: the 60th anniversary of the first summit between President Kaysone Phomvihane of the Lao PDR and President Kim Il Sung of DPRK in Pyongyang, as well as the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Workers’ Party of Korea, to be officially celebrated on October 10, 2025. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between the Lao PDR and the DPRK.

An official welcoming ceremony was held on the afternoon of October 7 at the Pyongyang Sports Complex, attended by more than 1,000 participants. The ceremony featured an honor guard review and a 21-gun salute, with the presence of Party officials, government representatives, members of the Korean People’s Army, and youth organizations—symbolizing the DPRK’s warm and respectful reception of the Lao delegation.

Following the ceremony, high-level talks were held between the leaderships of both nations. The two sides exchanged views on expanding cooperation in the political, economic, cultural, and educational fields, as well as on addressing regional and international issues of mutual concern. The discussions reaffirmed the shared ideological foundation and long-standing strategic partnership between Laos and the DPRK.

Both sides expressed their determination to deepen collaboration across multiple sectors and to continue supporting one another in efforts to advance national development and safeguard sovereignty. The talks served to further consolidate the time-tested friendship and mutual trust between the two Parties and States, which have remained steadfast amid changing regional and global dynamics.

President Thongloun expressed heartfelt appreciation for the warm welcome and generous hospitality extended by President Kim Jong Un and the Korean people. He underscored that the deep-rooted friendship between Laos and Korea—born from shared struggles for national independence—continues to thrive through ongoing cooperation and solidarity in the present era.

This official visit represents an important milestone in reinforcing the traditional friendship and strategic partnership between the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
