(KPL) The Lao government plans to release more than 65 million fish fingerlings and other aquatic species into rivers and water bodies across the country in 2025, as part of ongoing efforts to conserve biodiversity and promote sustainable ecosystems.
The initiative will mark the celebration of Lao National Aquatic and Wildlife Day on July 13.
At a press conference on Monday, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Chanthakhone Boualaphanh underscored the importance of the event, reaffirming the government’s commitment to the sustainable management, protection, and development of aquatic resources, which play a crucial role in the livelihoods of the Lao people.
“Laos is home to more than 500 species of fish, which not only contribute to ecological balance but are also a key part of our natural heritage,” the deputy minister said.
Each year, nationwide awareness campaigns are organized to engage communities, especially young people, in the protection of aquatic life and ecosystems.
In 2024, more than 64 million fish and aquatic animals were released across the country, with strong support from local communities, businesses, and international partners.
Building on this success, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment will continue its collaboration with local authorities in 2025 to expand fish and aquatic species release efforts, aiming to restore natural ecosystems and water sources.
The ministry is also working with development partners to strengthen the fisheries sector and promote its sustainable growth.
