(KPL) The Government of Singapore has donated 500 English-language children’s books to the National Library of Laos, underscoring its commitment to educational development and youth empowerment in the Lao PDR.

The official handover ceremony was held at the National Library in Vientiane and attended by Vansy Kouamoua, Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Sudesh Maniar, Ambassador of Singapore to the Lao PDR, Mr. Samlane Luangaphay, Director General of the National Library of Laos as well as teachers and students.

“I am pleased to be here for the handover of these children’s books from Singapore to the Lao PDR. Today’s event goes beyond the physical donation—it reaffirms the importance of human resource development and the enduring partnership between our two countries,” said Ambassador Maniar in his opening remarks.

With approximately 60 percent of the Lao population under the age of 25, access to quality reading materials is crucial in inspiring imagination, creativity, and curiosity in young learners. Encouraging a love for reading from an early age helps nurture lifelong learners, which is vital in today’s knowledge-driven economy.

The donation, curated by the National Library Board of Singapore, includes a diverse collection of English-language books ranging from picture books for early readers to chapter books for older children. The books are designed to support English language learning in a fun and engaging way.

“Singapore is privileged to contribute to nurturing the potential of Lao youth. These books are more than just reading materials—they are tools for learning, discovery, and opportunity,” Ambassador Maniar added.

He also highlighted the broader scope of Singapore’s support for human capital development in Laos. More than 17,000 Lao government officials have participated in the Singapore Cooperation Programme, either in Singapore or at the Laos-Singapore Cooperation Centre in Vientiane. In addition, Singapore offers scholarships for Lao students to study at secondary and tertiary levels.

“The Lao PDR recognises the importance of English as both the working language of ASEAN and a global language of commerce and knowledge. This donation adds another dimension to our collaboration in promoting English language proficiency—a priority area where Singapore has been a longstanding partner,” Ambassador Maniar said. “Many Lao leaders have fondly shared memories of their time in Singapore improving their English. I myself am an alumnus of the most recent course held in 2023.”

Deputy Minister Vansy Kouamoua expressed his appreciation for the generous contribution:

“We highly value this donation of English books from the Government of Singapore. It will contribute to strengthening the growing cooperation between Laos and Singapore, while promoting a culture of reading among our students and improving English language skills. These resources will greatly benefit education efforts across the country.”

He noted that all donated books will be properly registered and made available for public use at the National Library. A portion of the collection will also be distributed to provincial and school libraries to ensure broader access for children nationwide.

“I strongly believe Singapore will continue to support and assist Laos in the future,” Deputy Minister Vansy added.

This initiative represents yet another step in the deepening bilateral ties between Laos and Singapore, with education at the heart of their shared vision for development and prosperity.
