(KPL) A grand reception was held at the residence of the Ambassador of Japan to Laos to celebrate Japan’s National Day, marking the forthcoming 65th birthday of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito, and the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Lao PDR in Vientiane on Feb 13.

The event brought together dignitaries, officials, and guests to honor the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

Japanese Ambassador to Laos, Mr Tsutomu Koizumi, in his keynote speech, emphasized the significance of the upgraded bilateral relationship between Japan and Laos. He highlighted Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone’s recent visit to Japan, where the two nations elevated their ties to a ‘comprehensive strategic partnership’ during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru. Ambassador Koizumi also recalled President Thongloun Sisoulith’s vision to make 2025 a ‘golden year’ for both countries, expressed during the ambassador’s credential presentation last year.

Mr. Phout Simmalavong, Minister of Education and Sports and President of the Laos-Japan Friendship Association, delivered a congratulatory speech as the guest of honor. The event also featured a traditional sake barrel-breaking ceremony, with the barrel generously provided by the Fukuoka Lao Friendship Association. Following the ceremony, Ms. Thoummaly Vongphachanh, Chairperson of the Justice Committee of the National Assembly, offered a toast to the enduring friendship between Japan and Laos.

The reception was attended by high-ranking officials, including Mr. Phongsavanh Sisoulath, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs; Ms. Baykham Khattiya, Minister of Labor and Social Welfare; Ms. Suansavanh Vignaket, Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism; Mr. Bounfeng Phoummalaysith, Minister of Health; and Mr. Atsaphangthong Siphandone, Mayor of Vientiane Capital

Guests enjoyed a variety of Japanese cuisine and beverages while exploring booths showcasing the activities of Japanese companies, NGOs, and NPOs operating in Laos. The event featured cultural performances, including the Lao national anthem sung by Ms. Phonephanh Bounsoy and the Japanese national anthem performed by Japanese artist krage, who later entertained the audience with his hit song “Hibana.” Renowned Japanese calligrapher Mr. Suzuki also captivated attendees with a powerful calligraphy piece titled Friendship (Mittaphab).

Both krage and Mr. Suzuki are set to perform at the upcoming Japan Festival, scheduled scheduled to take place at Parkson Laos on February 14-15, further celebrating the cultural ties between Japan and Laos.

The reception underscored the strong and growing partnership between Japan and Laos, as both nations look forward to a future of continued collaboration and mutual prosperity.
