(KPL/VNA) A landslide in Pekalongan, Central Java of Indonesia has claimed at least 16 lives and left 10 others injured, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNBP) on January 21.

Heavy rainfall and strong winds from January 20 night to January 21 morning caused flash floods and landslides, with Petungkriono being the most severely hit.

Rescue, search and evacuation efforts are underway. Local authorities advised residents to exercise caution and avoid areas near rivers.

Earlier, floods hit nearly the entire city of Cirebon in West Java and the surrounding areas on January 17 night, submerging thousands of homes and forcing most residents to evacuate.

Acting Mayor of Cirebon Agus Mulyadi said this was one of the worst floods the city has experienced in the past five years, with water arriving suddenly, leaving many residents unable to save their belongings.
