DRC and WHO strengthen cooperation against Mpox

KPL (KPL/Prensa Latina) The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) strengthen cooperation against Mpox, a disease that has caused almost 1,400 deaths in the country since the beginning of 2024.

(KPL/Prensa Latina) The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) strengthen cooperation against Mpox, a disease that has caused almost 1,400 deaths in the country since the beginning of 2024.

DRC Minister of Health Roger Kamba met with Deputy Director-General and Deputy Executive Director of the WHO Emergencies Programme, Chikwe Ihekweazu, to discuss the importance of a global and coordinated approach.

Both sides called for effective integration of health services, active participation of communities and the use of reliable and accurate data, a key issue that will allow make decisions and adjust the response to the challenges posed by the epidemic.

Kamba insisted that the eradication of Mpox requires collective, sustained and lasting efforts. “We must redouble our commitment to protect our populations and prevent future outbreaks,” he wrote on Twitter.

In the third week of 2022 (January 13-18), the DRC recorded 888 suspected cases of the disease and no deaths.

The figures represent an improvement from previous weeks, when 2,318 suspected cases and 20 deaths were identified from December 30, 2024 to January 4, 2025; and 3,71 suspected cases and 26 deaths from January 6 to 11, the Health Ministry reported.
