(KPL) The annual Sam Pang Stupa Festival is slated to take place on January 11, 2025, in Soukhouma District, Champasak Province. The event aims to celebrate and preserve the nation’s rich cultural traditions while promoting local tourism, according to sources in Champasak Province.
This year’s festival will feature a variety of activities, including a mass parade, student art performances, a product exhibition, traditional boat competitions, religious ceremonies, and traditional sports. Highlights include a candlelight procession around the temple and an almsgiving ceremony.
In preparation for the festival, the village administration of Sam Pang, led by Mr. Bounyou Palamy, Deputy Chief of Soukhouma District, organized a collective clean-up campaign on January 8. Residents participated in cleaning village roads and festival venues to ensure the event’s success.
The Sam Pang Stupa, also known as the Sacred Stone, is a relic from the ancient Khmer Empire, which dominated much of Southeast Asia nearly a millennium ago. Following the empire’s collapse, its structures were integrated into new kingdoms and religious practices.
While many Khmer-era structures in Laos remain unrestored and challenging to access, they offer a unique glimpse into a bygone era, making the journey to these historical sites a rewarding experience.
