(KPL) On Nov 14, Buddhist monks, high-ranking officials, and Vientiane residents gathered for the annual wax castle procession in celebration of the 2024 That Luang Festival.

The main wax castle parade started from the revered Wat Si Meuang, proceeding toward That Luang. Leading the parade were Vientiane Mayor Atsaphangthong Siphandone, his spouse, Vice President of the Lao Front for National Development Inlavanh Keobounphan, and representatives of the Lao diaspora.

Participants from various villages and districts across Vientiane contributed wax castles of different sizes, some so large that they required many people to carry. Each smaller procession within the parade showcased unique decorations, with many highlighting traditional Lao customs and cultural symbols such as ethnic costumes, rice pounding, khaen fluting (a traditional Lao bamboo mouth organ), and drum beating.

Numerous wax castle parades from across Vientiane converged at That Luang. Despite the crowd, participants greeted one another warmly like family, sharing a sense of unity.

The parades circled That Luang’s main stupa, and the wax castles were placed in front of it as attendees made wishes and prayers.

The colorful and lively procession attracted both domestic and international tourists. This wax castle parade, rooted in religious ritual and cultural pride, exemplifies the craftsmanship and harmony of Laos' multi-ethnic society, particularly among Vientiane residents.

Passed down through generations, this cherished tradition is celebrated annually on the 14th day of the 12th month in the Lao lunar calendar, which this year fell on Nov 14, 2024.
