(KPL) The Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in collaboration with a Chinese business group, recently convened a meeting to explore the potential of Laos' durian sector for export to China.
Vice President of the Chamber, Mr. Bounlert Luangpasert, emphasized the rapid growth of durian cultivation in Laos, highlighting the Lao-China railway as a crucial transport link and the country's fertile agricultural land. He noted that the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has approved the export of 16-17 plant varieties, with seven more under review. China has also offered a 98% tax exemption on these exports.
Mr. Wang Jun, representing the Chinese business group, proposed establishing a fertilizer factory in Laos and creating a Lao Durian Business Association, a bean professional association, and a durian research center. These initiatives would focus on studying durian plants, addressing plant diseases, and developing disease-resistant and high-quality varieties. Research would also examine suitable soils and bio-fertilizers to ensure sustainable production.
The goal is to ensure that Lao durians meet the quality standards required for export. The proposed associations will manage quality control, including grading, pricing, packaging, and logistics, to streamline export operations.
