(KPL) The Lao Handicraft Association inaugurated the Traditional Lao Silk Residence in Vientiane on October 23. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was graced by Ms. Naly Sisoulith, spouse of the President, Ms. Suansavanh Viyaket, Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, along with other distinguished officials.
Coinciding with the opening was the launch of the Textile Treasures of Laos exhibition. Ms. Souvita Praseuth, President of the Lao Handicraft Association, highlighted the exhibition’s purpose: “We aim to celebrate the ethnic diversity and cultural richness of Lao textiles, focusing on heritage preservation, innovation, and the global recognition of Lao handicrafts.”
The exhibition showcases over 100 textiles, some nearly 300 years old, contributed by collectors, many of whom are over 70. The collection represents various ethnic groups in Laos, including the Lao-Tai, Mon-Khmer, Sino-Tibetan, Hmong-Ieu Mien, and Mone-Yao, featuring traditional costumes, ceremonial fabrics, and decorative pieces that reflect the craftsmanship and intellectual heritage of Laos.
Ms. Souvita noted that the exhibition preparations began with the building’s renovation, including upgrades to the electrical system. The exhibition was completed just in time to welcome the spouses of delegates attending the 44th and 45th ASEAN summits on October 10, and the 45th AIPA General Assembly on October 20.
In addition to the textile displays, visitors can witness demonstrations of the textile-making process. The exhibition also serves as a prelude to the upcoming 9th ASEAN Traditional Textile Symposium, scheduled for November 3-6, 2024.
Ms. Souvita expressed her gratitude to the artisans, collectors, and supporters who helped bring the exhibition to life. She acknowledged the vital support of government ministries, the Presidential Office, the Lao Handicraft Association’s Board of Advisors, and the spouses of Party and Government leaders.
Certificates were also presented to individuals and organizations whose contributions made the exhibition possible, helping to preserve Lao culture for future generations.
