KPL Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone has urged the Lao people to actively support the country’s role as host of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits, related events and ASEAN Chair in 2024.

(KPL) Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone has urged the Lao people to actively support the country’s role as host of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits, related events and ASEAN Chair in 2024.

The Prime Minister made these remarks in a public address, inviting all ethnic groups in Laos to contribute to the success of this significant event.

Prime Minister Sonexay emphasized that 2024 is a crucial year for Laos, marking both the Visit Laos Year and the nation's ASEAN Chairmanship. Since Laos became a member of ASEAN on July 23, 1997, the country has played an active role in the bloc's activities, previously serving as Chair in 2004-2005 and 2016. This third term, from January 1 to December 31, 2024, will further elevate Laos' standing within the regional and international arenas.

The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of ASEAN membership and chairmanship in raising Laos' profile and showcasing the country’s rich cultural heritage.

It also serves as a platform to attract international support, collaboration, trade, investment, tourism, and human resource development from ASEAN and external partners.

Operating under the theme "ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience," Laos' 2024 ASEAN Chairmanship aligns with the country's strategic goal of transforming from a landlocked nation into a regional connectivity hub. The theme also reflects ASEAN's broader mission of strengthening integration and addressing emerging challenges effectively.

Laos' ASEAN Chairmanship has already seen significant progress in the past eight months, with various ministries and sectors hosting and presiding over ASEAN meetings. These include the successful 57th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting and related events held in Vientiane from July 24-27, 2024.

Prime Minister Sonexay urged the Lao people to take pride in their country’s achievements and to continue supporting the ASEAN Chairmanship, as it will contribute to the nation’s long-term development and its growing role on the global stage.
