(KPL) The Forum on “How to Use Artificial Intelligence and Challenges of Social Media for Lao Media” convened on Friday in Vientiane, bringing together over 200 participants from media organizations nationwide. The event is part of the celebrations marking the 74th Lao Media Day, which commemorates the establishment of the Lao media sector on August 13, 1950.
The forum aimed to provide media professionals—including editors, journalists, and media managers—with insights into the latest advancements in media technology and the evolving landscape of the industry. The session featured both in-person and online interactions, allowing for a broad range of participation and discussion.
Key objectives of the forum included exploring the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to transform news production and editing processes. AI technologies are expected to streamline workflows, enabling faster delivery of content and expanding the reach of media outlets. The forum highlighted how AI can help in producing richer content and meeting the public’s growing demand for timely information, aligning with both Party and state development policies.
Participants also delved into the digitalization of media, addressing strategies to combat fake news and misleading information. Experts from both the public and private sectors offered advice on navigating these challenges, emphasizing the role of media in promoting green and sustainable development in Laos.
Australian Deputy Ambassador to the Lao PDR, Mr. Dan Heldon, addressed the attendees, noting the dual nature of AI’s impact on the media. “In a complex and changing world, the media faces numerous challenges, including rapid digitalization, the rise of fake news, and evolving cyber threats,” Heldon said. “AI technologies, while offering opportunities for growth and innovation, also complicate the journalist’s role in discerning and reporting the truth. I hope this forum will be instrumental in understanding these challenges and opportunities.”
Dr. Bounheng Southichak, Managing Director of Lao Youth Radio FM 90.0 MHz, emphasized the necessity of embracing AI. “AI comes to assist us, and its impact will depend on our willingness to adapt,” Southichak remarked. “AI is not here to cause disruption, but those who fail to adapt to it will be disrupted.”
Artificial intelligence, a technology enabling machines to mimic human intelligence and problem-solving abilities, is increasingly becoming integral to various sectors, including media.
The forum underscored the importance of integrating AI into media practices to enhance efficiency and adapt to the rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Overall, the forum served as a critical platform for Lao media professionals to exchange experiences, explore innovative solutions, and prepare for the future of media in an AI-driven world.
