Parties debate solutions to labour shortage

(KPL) The Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare on Jun 20 organized a meeting to discuss solutions to labor shortage and improvement of workers’ welfare.
The meeting was held in Vientiane and chaired by Minister of Labour and Social Welfare Baykham Khattiya in the presence of representatives from the Lao Federation of Trade Unions, and relevant central and provincial authorities.
“Labor balance is one of the five balances needed to address the government's economic difficulties. Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone signed Agreement No. 48 appointing a committee to take care of labour balancing and provision of labour to labor units, investment projects and economic zones based on the current demand of labour market,” said Minister Baykham Khattiya.  
The Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare has contemplated a plan to address labour shortage and improve workers’ welfare, and working conditions of labour units to create favourable conditions for and attract workers to the labour market.
The plan identifies short-term and long-term solutions including the division of responsibilities between the provincial and Vientiane Departments of Labor and Welfare.
“This meeting is a technical conference focusing on debating the plan, discussing the responsibilities of each party. We need to know whether the responsibilities are suitable, and which responsibilities should be abolished or added, how district employment offices should be tasked and how employment companies contribute to addressing labour shortage,” said Minister Baykham Khattiya.
