(KPL) The Plan International Laos last week signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bokeo Provincial Agriculture and Forestry Office on the Rural Enterprises for Agricultural Livelihoods project.
The agreement on the Rural Enterprises for Agricultural Livelihoods (REAL) was signed by Mr. Sibounhouang, the General Director of Bokeo Provincial Agriculture and Forestry Office, and Mr. Sengsantisith Sanasisane, the Deputy Country Director of Plan International Laos.
The REAL Project aims to empower over 2,000 households in Bokeo province by enhancing their capacity and skills. The project's objectives include understanding market potentials and adopting climate-resilient agricultural products and technologies to improve livelihoods. This initiative will span from the approval date until December 31, 2026.
The project will target five districts in Bokeo province. Through capacity building and skill development, households in these districts will be equipped to navigate market dynamics and adopt sustainable agricultural practices to enhance their livelihoods.
"Climate change isn't just a global issue; it's a daily reality for livelihoods in Bokeo. Through our rural enterprises for agricultural livelihoods project, we're not just cultivating crops; we're cultivating resilience. By empowering farmers with climate-resilient techniques and market insights, we're not only safeguarding their incomes but also fortifying their futures. Together, we're not just adapting to change; we're thriving amidst it," said Mr. Sengsantisith Sanasisane.
Funded by KOICA through Plan International Korea, coordinated and implemented by Plan International Laos and Maeying Huamchai Phattan Association (MHP), this project focuses on boosting climate resilience in Bokeo province. Communities here are being educated about the potential of climate-resilient products and technologies, empowering them to make informed choices for sustainability.
Households across various districts are increasingly embracing climate-resilient agricultural products and technologies, with Plan International Laos and MHP leading the charge. This initiative promotes adaptation and innovation in farming practices, helping communities better withstand the challenges posed by climate change.
Under the guidance of Plan International Laos and MHP, significant progress will be made. Participatory land use planning will be completed, and farmer organisations and youth-led micro-enterprises will be established in districts like Pha Oudom, Meung, and Houayxai. This collaborative effort aims to expand value chains and encourage sustainable agricultural practices.
Supported by local governments and the implementation of the District Agriculture and Forestry Office framework, communities are progressing towards enhancing their resilience and well-being. Through annual review workshops and ongoing monitoring, these initiatives ensure continued success, paving the way for a brighter and more sustainable future for all.
"In the face of climate change, communities are witnessing profound impacts on their livelihoods. To ensure survival, they must fortify their resilience through enhanced production and technology skills. These skills are not just essential for adaptation; they are lifelines in the battle for survival against an increasingly unpredictable environment," said Mr. Sanasisane.
