(KPL/VNA) Laos's Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare plans to issue visas to illegal foreign workers and extend permits to legal ones so that they can continue to work in the country.

The move will help Laos better manage illegal workers and solve the growing labour shortage in the country.

To realise the plan, the ministry has just applied a system to accelerate the issuance of registration cards and work permit extensions for foreign workers in Laos. This system is designed not only to ensure uniformity, but also to simplify the issuance of entry permits, registration cards, and re-issuance of work permits to foreign workers.

The new system is designed to ensure uniformity and streamline the issuing of worker entry permits, registration cards, and renewed work permits for foreign workers.

In recent years, with the increasing number of foreign workers migrating to Laos, especially illegal workers, the country's authorities at all levels have taken many measures to protect the rights of workers and ensure social order and safety.

In 2012, the Lao Government began conducting labour registration for immigrants and in 2023, to manage illegal foreign workers, it opened centres at all departments of labour and social welfare in provinces and cities for foreigners to register and issue them temporary work permits.

According to the ministry, the new licencing and foreign worker management system will help the Lao Government collect information and determine the number of illegal migrant workers to take appropriate solutions.
