(KPL) The Ministry of Technology and Communications (MoTC) has insisted that the monthly deduction of LAK 3,000 from every phone user for the purpose of cybersecurity is necessary and such action needs cooperation and participation from everyone in society, especially telecommunications and internet providers and users.

Transparent regulations have been put in place to ensure the security protection fees are used for protecting cybersecurity and reducing cybercrimes such as internet fraud, fake news, data hacking, identity theft and for promoting digitalization and access to telecommunications services in remote areas, according to an announcement of the Permanent Secretary Office of the MoTC.

Dated April 2, 2024, the announcement states that telecommunications companies can only deduct security fees from their internet and phone users on a monthly basis, not repeatedly in a single month.

Phone numbers beginning with 020 or 030 are subject to a deduction of LAK 3,000 per month. Meanwhile each of those using cable internet is required to pay LAK 5,000 per month as a security protection fee.
