(KPL) Many automobile drivers have been fined due to driving without buckling their seatbelts, yet the relevant rule is not universally enforced.

Ngeun Nittaphone of Saysettha District Traffic Department told KPL News on Wednesday that traffic rules regarding seatbelt use, stopping on zebra crossings and other relevant rules were adopted a couple years ago but their enforcement has been not universal across Vientiane Capital, as some districts are currently enforcing them but others are yet to do so.

A report posted on online media by LaoPost says that drivers failing to comply with seatbelt-related rules will be fined up to 150,000 kip per incident.

The Law on Land Traffic, endorsed on Jan 17, 2013 by the President of Lao PDR, states in the last section of its Article 18 that the driver and front-seat passenger of any vehicle with four or more wheels shall wear seatbelts and children who cannot wear normal seatbelts must be provided customised seats.

Economic growth over the past several years has resulted in an increase in the number of cars, traffic jams, and accidents, especially on roads in Vientiane.
