(KPL) The Khamphaysana Group has been authorised by the Ministry of Planning and Investmentto conduct a feasibility study into the development of twopower plants in the downstream areas of the Nam Ngum River in Vientiane Province.
The MoU on the authorisation of the company was signed on May 26 in Vientiane between Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Khamlien Pholsena and Director of Khamphaysana Group Khamphay Somsana in the presence of Vientiane Provincial Governor Vidong Sayasone and representatives of relevant sectors.
Mr. Khamphay said that the two hydropower projects will be located in the downstream areas of the Nam Ngum River in Vientiane Province.
They will be built as run-of-river projects with one located in Choum, Thulakhom district and the other located in Namnin, Viengkham district.
The plants will be designed to prevent flooding and have limited reservoirs. They will be different from conventional dams, which usually have swamp-like and floodable areas, and will have limited impacts on the environment and communities, as they will have low barriers and small reservoirs.
The projects, expected to be built within four years, are part of the government’s efforts to turn the country into the battery of ASEAN. The two projects are expected to cost U$S250 million (around 2 trillion kip) and have a minimum combined installed generation capacity of 128 MW.
The feasibility study will take 18 months to be completed.
