KPL The Government of Japan has provided US$109,000 in grant assistance to support the construction of a small hospital in Houaykhoualuang Village, Xayabouly District, Xayabouly Province, to improve access to primary healthcare for local residents.

Japanese Ambassador to the Lao PDR Koizumi Tsutomu signed the grant contract with a representative of the provincial authorities under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).
The project will fund the construction of a new hospital building, the provision of hospital furniture and the installation of a water tower.
The existing hospital was built in 1994 and has deteriorated significantly over the years. Located in a low-lying area along the Mekong River, it is also vulnerable to flooding during periods of heavy rain. The new building will be constructed on higher ground purchased by local residents to reduce flood risks.

Ambassador Koizumi expressed hope that the project would improve the hospital’s facilities and medical environment, enabling healthcare workers to provide better services to patients.
Japan’s GGP programme supports small-scale projects that directly benefit local communities and contribute to social and economic development in developing countries, including Laos.
To date, the Government of Japan has provided more than US$1.7 million to Xayabouly Province for projects, primarily in education, public health and water supply.
Japan will continue supporting grassroots initiatives to improve living conditions and reduce socio-economic disparities in Laos, in line with its commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind.
