(KPL/VNA) The remains of 16 Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts, who laid down their lives in different periods in the Lao provinces of Champasak and Attapeu, have been repatriated following a handover ceremony in Champasak on May 7.

The remains were found by a special task committee of Kon Tum province, in coordination with its Lao counterparts in Champasak, Sekong and Attapeu provinces during the 2024-2025 dry season.

Speaking at the ceremony, Y Ngoc, Standing Vice Chairwoman of the Kon Tum provincial People's Committee, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the leaders, authorities, special task committees, and local people for their dedicated support and coordination during the search for and repatriation.

Vietnamese volunteers and experts, alongside the Lao People’s Armed Forces, achieved many glorious victories, making significant contributions to the revolutionary cause of both countries' Parties, States, and armies, she added.

Representing the Lao side, Sombouttakun, Vice Governor of Champasak, underscored the significance of the event in continuing and nurturing the long-standing, great friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Vietnam.

The mission reflects the tradition of "remembering the source while drinking water", a tribute of profound respect and gratitude to fallen heroes. It also serves as a powerful reminder for both nations, especially the younger generations, of the historic and enduring bond between Vietnam and Laos.
