(KPL) Laos has witnessed an unprecedented surge in tourism, with both domestic and international visitor numbers exceeding expectations compared to 2023. The remarkable growth highlights the success of government initiatives and a revitalized travel industry.
Domestic tourism recorded over 3.90 million visits, marking an impressive 102% increase from the previous year, Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Ms. Suansavanh Viyaket reported on Feb 5, 2025.
The surge contributed significantly to the economy, generating over USD 632 million in revenue. Meanwhile, international tourism saw over 4.12 million visits, reflecting a 21% increase and bringing in USD1.13 billion in revenue.
As part of the Visit Laos Year 2024 initiative, the Lao government introduced a visa exemption policy for selected countries. The policy, in effect from July 1 to December 31, 2024, played a crucial role in attracting more tourists, particularly from China. The number of Chinese visitors increased by 63%, reaching over 1.04 million visits compared to 2023.
The launch of Visit Laos Year 2024 presents an opportunity to enhance the quality of tourism services and related businesses.
Many enterprises have undergone assessment and certification in alignment with ASEAN tourism standards, ensuring improved service quality and a better visitor experience.
The official opening ceremony of Visit Laos Year 2024 took place on November 23, 2023, coinciding with the celebrated That Luang Festival.
The event was presided over by Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone under the theme: “A Paradise of Lao Culture, Nature and History”.
With strong momentum in 2024, Laos continues to position itself as a leading travel destination in Southeast Asia. The government's strategic policies and commitment to high-quality tourism services ensure a promising future for the nation's tourism industry.
