KPL Buddhists across the Lao PDR gathered at temples on July 29 to offer alms and perform merit-making ceremonies in observance of Boun Khao Phansa, marking the beginning of the annual three-month Buddhist Lent.

The occasion, which falls on the 15th day of the waxing moon of the eighth lunar month (B.E. 2569), drew large numbers of worshippers to temples nationwide. In Vientiane, devotees participated in almsgiving ceremonies while continuing traditions that have been passed down through generations.
The day's observances included chanting, listening to Buddhist sermons, and other religious ceremonies. At several temples, donors also organized charity booths offering food, drinks, and refreshments to worshippers attending the celebrations.
Boun Khao Pansa is one of the most significant events in the Buddhist calendar. It marks the beginning of the Rains Retreat (Vassa), during which monks remain at their monasteries for three months to devote themselves to meditation, religious study, temple maintenance, and the teaching of Buddhist principles.
For lay Buddhists, the festival is an opportunity to make merit, strengthen their faith, and dedicate blessings to deceased relatives, ancestors, and departed loved ones in accordance with longstanding Lao tradition.
The annual observance also reflects the unity and devotion of the Lao people in preserving the country's rich Buddhist heritage and cultural traditions, while encouraging compassion, generosity, and moral living throughout society.
