10th Party Congress opened today

KPL (KPL) Today, 18 Jan 2016, the 10th Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party was officially opened at the National Convention Centre in Vientiane Capital in the presence of Secretary General Choummaly Sayasone, politburo members, the secretariat, and Party Central Committee of the 9th Party Congress. The meeting is being attended by 684 full Party members who represent over 200,000 Party members across the country.

(KPL) Today, 18 Jan 2016, the 10th Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party was officially opened at the National Convention Centre in Vientiane Capital in the presence of Secretary General Choummaly Sayasone, politburo members, the secretariat,and Party Central Committee of the 9th Party Congress.

The meeting is being attended by 684 full Party members who represent over 200,000 Party members across the country

Gen. Khamtay Siphandone, former Party Secretary General and former State President; Lt. Gen. Samane Viyaketh, former politburo member and former President of the National Assembly, and Gen. Sisavath Keobounphanh, former politburo member and former President of the Lao Front for National Construction, as well as more than 400 honourable guests from central and local organizations nationwide are also taking part in the meeting.

In his opening speech, Party General Secretary Choummaly Sayasone expressed limitless gratitude and respectful commemoration to late beloved President Kaysone Phomvihane who found the Lao People's Army, Lao People's Revolutionary Party, a new regime and launched the principle based renovation policy in the Lao PDR.

Party General Secretary Choummaly Sayasone noted that the Congress took place at an important time, when the country recorded a great number of achievements in the cause of national defence and construction made in the past 40 years.

The meeting will witness the approval of a political report reviewing the challenges and achievements recorded under the leadership of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party over the past five years including the constant economic growth, the achievement of per capita income increasing to US$1,970 in 2015, the reduction in the percentage of poor families to 6.59%, the increase of the percentage of families with access to electricity to 89%, as well as the launch of the communications satellite Lao Sat 1 and the groundbreaking ceremony of the Lao-China high-speed railway projecton the occasion of celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Lao PDR.

Over the next 5 days (18-22 Jan) the full members will review and approvethe 8th five-year national socio-economic development plan for 2016-2020 designed to ensure the graduation of the country from the list of least developed country status by 2020, the annual economic growth rate of at least 7.5%, the balanced national economic structure, the addressing of poverty, and the creation of favourable conditions for national industrialization and modernisation.

The meeting will also approve amendments to the Party statute and elect the Party Central Committee
