(KPL) The German Embassy signed a contract to support, through its Small Scale Projects fund, a project with the “Sustainable Laos Education Initiatives” and its Sai Nyai Eco-School, located in Kengkia Village of Champasak Province.
Since 2008, Sai Nyai has conducted educational programs for adults, children and youth with a focus on helping economically disadvantaged rural communities meet their vital needs in ecologically and socially sustainable ways.
Sai Nyai's primary beneficiaries are children, youth and adults from about 14 villages, comprised of many ethnic minority groups facing significant poverty. Those villages represent some of the poorest in a district itself listed by the Lao government as one of the 47 "least developed districts" in the country. The School offers training and workshops for villagers, material and technical support, micro-loans, and a demonstration center for alternative ecological living.
In December 2014, Sai Nyai opened its Community Learning Center, managed by three Youth Leaders from the local secondary school. The Community Learning Center gives local communities free access to alternative activities, providing both focused activities and 'free time' learning for its daily attendants.
Sai Nyai offers arts supplies to reinforce leadership, ethnic and gender equality, creativity, resilience and problem-solving capacity development, brain-teaser games and scientific material to reinforce environmental awareness and self-directed education, literacy promotion activities for cultural preservation and education and sports supplies to reinforce health and self-confidence.
The Embassy grant will cover expenses for the purchase of materials like musical instruments, sports equipment and books for the Community Center.
