SUNWIP provides clean water supply for people in Xeno area, Savannakhet

KPL (KPL) The Lao government and the European Union (EU) jointly strive to improve access to clean water in Khammuan and Savannakhet provinces through the Scaling-Up Nutrition and WASH Infrastructure Project (SUNWIP) to contribute to achieving SDG 2 “End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture” and SDG 6 “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”.

 


(KPL) The Lao government and the European Union (EU) jointly strive to improve access to clean water in Khammuan and Savannakhet provinces through the Scaling-Up Nutrition and WASH Infrastructure Project (SUNWIP) to contribute to achieving SDG 2 “End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture” and SDG 6 “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”.

The total financial commitment for the project amounts to EUR 16.95 million.

EUR 15 million is granted by the EU through KfW, and EUR 1.95 million is contributed by the government of the Lao PDR.

Under this EU grant from 2018, the Department of Water Supply (DWS), Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) as the main Project Executing Unit has awarded 12 contracts to construct 29 water supply systems in urban and peri-urban areas in 5 districts, namely Nong, Atsaphone and Xepon in Savannakhet province and Hinboun and Nhommalath in Khammuan province.

This month, the last two contracts, worth over 23 billion kip, for the rehabilitation and extension of the water supply system of the town of Xeno area, Outhoumphone district, Savannakhet province have been awarded.

The signing ceremony was held on Oct 26 at the Landmark Hotel, Vientiane between Mr. Sompong Sitthivong, Director General, Department of Water Supply, Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Mr. Xayasene Keovilaysak, Director General, Department of Public Works and Transport Savannakhet Province, and representatives of five contractors namely Joint Venture of Phounthavy Construction, SMS Bhadhan and Tai Drilling, Joint Venture of Chalernchai Construction - Repair Irrigation, Roads Bridge and Homestead, and Savankham Building Construction.

The construction is expected to be completed by November 2021.

Under the SUNWIP-contract, water supply systems will be provided to effectively improve access to clean water for households, communities, healthcare facilities and schools in Xeno area for around 27,000 people in 11 villages by 2040.

In total, SUNWIP aims to reach more than 90,000 people in 62 villages in Khammuan and Savannakhet provinces.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Minister of Public Works and Transport Bounchanh Sinthavong, and representatives of government partners from MPWT, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Planning and Investment, line ministries, provincial and district authorities as well as the European Union and KfW Vientiane Office.
