(KPL) More than 2,000 students from schools across Vientiane Capital turned out on Mar 7 for the 1st Vientiane Book Festival which will last through Mar 17.

Held at the World Trade Center, the festival has drawn more than 200 booths representing public, private and foreign book publishers and distributors.

Present at the opening ceremony included the Vice Mayor of Vientiane, Mr Sihoun Sitthileuxay, the Vice Minister of Education and Sports, Mr Boualanh Siriphanya and representatives of relevant government bodies.

“This book festival aims to make people realize the importance of reading, help parents and teachers recognize the encouragement of reading habits among children and young people,” a member of the organizing committee of the Vientiane Book Festival, Mr Mana Chengmouk.

The festival is an opportunity for book readers and writers as well as publishers to find new books, to share ideas and lessons. Publishers will know how to develop and make their products, books more interesting to target readers,” added Mr Mana Chengmouk.

The festival also features Q&A, sports games, a free book giveaway.

 The event is open to the public everyday from 9:00 to 21:30, Friday - Sunday closed at 22:30.
