(KPL) Sun Paper Holding Laos, the first pulp manufacturer in the Lao PDR, has launched three-month trial operation following ten years of conducting feasibility study, farming eucalyptus and building a pulp factory.

Our company has invested 432 million US dollars in building this pulp factory equipped with the most modern equipment and machinery in the world. The construction lasted 16 months.

Located in an area of 180 ha in Ban Manchy, Sepon district, Savannakhet, the pulp factory has an annual production capacity of 300,000 tonnes and needs up to 1 million tonnes of eucalyptus annually.

All the pulp produced by the factory will be exported to China, Sun Paper Holding Laos Director Xen Wen Jun told the media on Jul 13.

“We have launched trial pulp production since May 22, 2018 and it will last three months to determine the readiness of machinery as well as other negative impacts before we can proceed with normal operation.

Over the past 10 years, Sun Paper Holding has planted eucalyptus on around 9,000 ha. The company also urged local farmers to plant eucalyptus in their own lands and sell the farmed eucalyptus to the factory at a guaranteed price of 300,000 kip (less than 40 US$) per tonne.

Sun Paper Holding Laos is a subsidiary company of Shan Dong Sun Paper Industry Joint Stock which was established in 1982 and is among the 40 largest papermakers in the world. Its annual production is 7.4 million tonnes.
