(KPL) The Nam Chien hydropower plant project, valued at US$250 million, is expected to impound water for its power generation next month as 94 percent of its construction activities have been completed since 2013.

The water impounding in July constitutes the preparation of the project for the trial generation of its generator 1 before the trial generation with generator 2 can be made in September.

The project stretches from Keosed village in Khoun district, Xieng Khuang province to Samkothong village in Thathom district, Xaysomboun province.

The hydropower plant is expected to generate over 450 million KWh of electrical power annually.

All energy generated by the hydropower project will be transmitted to the power grid of EDL for power consumption, mainly in Xiengkhouang, Xaysomboun, and Bolikhamxay.

Minister of Energy and Mines Khammany Inthilath on Jun 6-7 paid an inspection visit to the Nam Chien hydropower project and other power and mining related projects in Xiengkhouang, Xaysomboun, Borikhamxay and Khammouane.

The Nam Chien hydropower project is a priority project in the national socio-economic development plan of the government. It is 100 percent state owned and financed with a loan from the Export-Import Bank of China — Exim Bank of China.

Launched in July 2013, the construction of the hydropower project is expected to be completed by February 2018.
