(KPL) A meeting to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party was held in Vientiane Capital on 21 March and was attended by senior Party officials and state leaders as well as representatives of society across all social strata.
Speaking at the event, Secretary General of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party Mr Choummaly Sayasone recalled the significance of the establishment of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party over the past 60 years.
Sixty years ago, it was referred to as the Lao People’s Party. Now it is called the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP). It was founded by the late President Kaysone Phomvihane who was the great leader of the national revolutionary movement in Laos that was based on the aspirations of the Indochinese Communist Party.
“The establishment of LPRP has great meaning and was a great historical event that laid the foundation for what Lao has become today. The formation of the Party involved selfless fighting for national liberation and independence and led the nation to eventually gain independence and national construction and move forward to prosperity,” he said.
“The civilization that we enjoy today was made possible by the sacrifices of the Party over the past 60 years,” said Mr Choummaly who is also the President of the Lao PDR.
During his speech, he strongly reaffirmed his commitment to accompany the Lao PDR to move forward to a socialist nation.
“From now through 2020, we will use all possible means to maintain economic growth at no less that 7-8% per year and focus on reducing poverty and graduating Lao from least developed country status,” he said.
On the auspicious occasion, President Choummaly, representing the Party and government, expressed his heartfelt dedication to his tasks and sincere appreciation to friendly countries for the support they have given to the Party and Lao people over the past 60 years.
The meeting was attended by more than 200 senior Party leaders and high-ranking officials of the Party including former President Khamtay Siphandone and former Politburo members, Mr Sisavat Keobounphanh and Mr Saman Viyakhet.
