(KPL)  The authorities of Luang Prabang Province have authorised a private company to turn the northern part of the That Luang stupa grounds into a green zone in preparation for the Lao New Year festival, also known as Pi Mai Lao, which will fall in mid-April.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the green project took place last weekend at That Luang in the presence of Luang Prabang Governor Khamkhanh Chanthavisouk, representatives of the contractor, and relevant authorities.

The construction will be conducted in two phases with the first one involving concrete paving and the improvement of ornamental gardens.

Drainage facilities will also be built and a grass garden area will be improved.  The green zone will sit on 74,380 sq m and is expected to be completed before the Lao New Year at a cost of US$3 million.

The provincial authorities have an ambitious plan to make Luang Prabang Province more attractive to visitors with several projects approved for the development of basic infrastructure including roads, electricity and water supply facilities, hotels, and other related facilities.
